Rooftop Box Selection Guide
Considerations when choosing a rooftop box
Type of car
Hatchback or coupé
With rooftop boxes longer than 200 cm, the 3rd/5th door may not fully open.
Station wagon or sedan
You usually have no size limitations.
Hybrid car
The THULE L is lightweight but offers a lot of storage space!
Tall vehicle
The THULE XL and THULE XXL open on both sides.
Van
Due to the height of your vehicle, a ski box is often more practical.
MPV
Many passengers, little space. The THULE XXL is almost always the right choice.
Maximum roof load
Your car’s manual will list any possible limitations.
Travel group
Children up to 4 years old
You need to carry a lot! A THULE M is often convenient because of its width.
Litres per person
A rule of thumb is 90 litres per person for a 10-day holiday.
Type of holiday/luggage
Ski holiday
Carrying skis longer than 168 cm? Then you definitely need a ski box.
Camping holiday
You have a lot of luggage. A capacity of 400+ litres is a popular choice.
Long holiday
You generally take more gear, so choose a box with at least 400 litres: THULE L, THULE XL or THULE XXL.
Heavy luggage
The THULE XL and XXL can carry up to 75 kg; other rooftop boxes can carry up to 50 kg.
Other considerations
Higher load capacity
With the Bagagebox XL and Bagagebox XXL, you can carry heavier loads because they have a reinforced metal frame in the base and a thicker shell.
